The feelings of despair for the loss of human life weren’t her burden to bear, she knew, but she still felt lost, and Kyra pressed herself into Thrayke’s strong hold. He wrapped himself around her tightly, and didn’t let go until she let him.

“I love you,” she whispered, and the sound of her still croaky voice made her wince, but it was a wondrous sound, and one she was still shocked to have back after having spent so long in silence.

“I love you, too,” he replied. “I’m going to make all of this better, believe me…”

She did, and knew that while everything she’d once known had been lost, the most important piece of her heart was right beside her, keeping her safe. All they had to do now was survive the chaos both knew had to be coming their way.
