“Sure, show me proof,” she agreed, going along with his nonsense. Why shouldn’t she entertain this for a minute? It wasn’t as if he would really show her a pair of fangs.

Chapter Five

“Are you sure?” Devin asked Krishell one last time.

“Yes, I’m positive. Prove to me that you are a creature of the night.” She waved her hand at him to continue.

Slowly, Devin opened his mouth and allowed his fangs to fully descend.

Krishell’s eyes grew round as saucers, and he sensed her panic set in a second before he grabbed her, preventing her from running out the door. She struggled against him as he held her closer.

“Shit! You are a vampire,” she screamed. “God, please don’t hurt me. I don’t want to die. I promise I’ll leave you alone for now on. I’ll find a different place to live if you want me to. I won’t tell anyone about your secret.”

His heart clenched at the fear in her beautiful voice. The last thing he wanted to do was make her scared of him or what he was. “Krishell, calm down,” he coaxed as held her face and looked down into her tear-filled eyes. “I’m not going to hurt you. Baby, I love you. I would never do anything to harm you.”

She stopped fighting as his words seemed to penetrate the wall of fear surrounding her, and slowly her expression changed from fear to curiosity until she stared into his eyes without fear.

Being this close to her felt like perfection to him, and he wanted to make love to her, but he had to move carefully so he didn’t scare her away from him a second time.

He had already confessed part of his secret, but the rest would have to come out very carefully. If it didn’t, she might try to run away from him again, and he wouldn’t allow that to happen. He refused to lose her after he just found her.

“How can you love me?” Krishell questioned, skepticism clear in her voice. “You barely know me. Besides, weren’t you trying to make me leave you alone? Your behavior doesn’t sound like a man…uh…sorry…a vampire in love to me.”

She obviously wouldn’t let him forget how badly he had spoken to her. Now was the time to start proving his devotion for her. “I’ve loved you from the moment my father allowed me to know who you were. He had known about you for years, but he couldn’t tell me about your existence until you turned twenty-five. I never thought it would take me two extra years to find you. Over the years, haven’t you felt as if the other half of you was missing?”

Placing her hands on his chest, she pushed him away and eased around him, moving further into his living room. Looking back over her shoulder, she asked, “How did you know that?”

He was pleased that she didn’t try to leave again. He could work with this. She was willingly to listen to what he had to say.

“I know because we’re destined to be together. Only I can fill that void in you. And you in me.”

Twirling back around, she watched him from across the room. “I’ve listened to you, and I’m not into this vampire and mate stuff. However, I will keep my promise to you about keeping your secret. I’m also woman enough to step aside and allow someone else who might find this situation very sexy to step into my place.”

Devin had to admit his woman had spunk. He was going to love spending the rest of his life with her. Could he handle if she only wanted to make love to him? He seemed so sure of their future together, but she wasn’t actually on the same page. What if he wasn’t telling her everything?
