He chuckled. “I think that's what
I'm
supposed to do.”
She tickled the back of his neck, and he immediately made progress toward being ready to burst.
He had to do something else first, though. He had to hold her. Just hold her. And tell her how much he loved her. He'd only done that once before, and that was when he thought he would die.
Now he wanted to say it with hope. With dreams. With promises he thought he could keep.
His mouth moved to hers and his hands savored her face, and he said
I
love you
in every way he knew. Finally, he took his lips away and held her face in his hands. “I love you,” he said in a voice crackling with feelings he'd always been afraid to recognize.
She smiled, her lips trembling, her eyes bright with mist, and Kane O'Brien, Diablo, knew he'd ascended to heaven.
