Praise for Murder of the Month:

“… entertaining and enjoyable.”

—Mystery Scene Magazine

“… a terrific amateur sleuth story that
lightly satirizes that sub-genre and animal
detective tales. The story blends the right
amount of serious family conflict with an
engaging investigation … hopefully the reader
will have more inquiries to look forward to
from this snoop of the month club.”

When Tory Baxter reluctantly comes to Silver Pine, Oregon, to claim an inherited Victorian mansion, she is furious at finding herself stranded over the long Fourth of July weekend. Her disciplined, fast-paced life as a successful financial analyst in Seattle is a far cry from daily life in this sleepy little town, and she doesn’t expect to like anything about the place. Her unpleasant initial encounter with Brian Rafferty, a handsome local veterinarian, reinforces that notion at first, but little by little, she finds herself falling under the spell of Silver Pine-and Brian. But Tory and Brian disagree about her plans to sell her house to a developer who wants to make Silver Pine the “new Aspen.” Has Brian betrayed her, or is Tory the one who is being less than honest with him?

“Richer By Far is more than a man and woman on opposite sides of a land development deal. The characterization is rich and compelling. Tory, Brian, and even the dog, Jake, come to life beneath the deft skill of first-time novelist Elizabeth C. Main. Humor, complex family histories, and multiple motivations add up to a lot of novel for a book this length. Richer By Far leaves the reader wealthier in spirit for the reading. An entertaining romance from a fresh talent.”

Acknowledgments

Writing is a solitary enterprise, yet no author has ever collected a more enthusiastic rooting section than I. Patsy Williams, Sally Bee Brown, and Helen Vandervort provided helpful critiques; many others added encouragement as this project wound its tortuous way toward completion.

In particular, I’d like to acknowledge my late mother-in-law, Dorothy Gillmore Main, for her unfailing interest in my novel. She’d have greeted its publication with joy.

Also, while successfully dealing with her own medical challenge, my sister, Susan Nelson, has always taken the time to encourage me in this endeavor. Her courage is inspirational.

Karen, Eric, Mike, and Julie all deserve special praise for their patience with my monomania.

On the professional side, my thanks go to Roz Greenberg, who went the extra mile for this book. Tiffany Schofield has provided help whenever I’ve needed it. Last, but certainly not least, I salute Jerri Corgiat Gallagher, surely the best editor ever.

About the Author

A Northwest author who taught high school and reared a family before turning to writing, Elizabeth C. Main found inspiration for her first Jane Serrano mystery,
Murder of the Month
, while selling books at an independent
c
entral Oregon bookstore for ten years.
Though, alas, no murders occurred in the real store to provide drama, her experience working there, coupled with a hefty dose of whimsy, provided ample material for her bookstore mystery, which won the
1998 Pacific Northwest Writers Association
contest for Best Adult Mystery Novel. She has also published two novels in the romance and young adult genres, as well as short stories and essays.
She lives in idyllic Bend,
Oregon, with her husband

and the memory of a special dog who left them on September 17, 2012
.
