About the Authors

Marilee Strong
is an award-winning journalist who specializes in

the coverage of psychological and social issues. She is the author of

A Bright Red Scream
(Viking, 1998) on the aftereffects of childhood

abuse and trauma. She has also written widely for newspapers and

magazines on such topics as child kidnappings, women in prison,

gang violence, hate groups, and psychological treatment for sex

offenders. A graduate of Columbia University’s Graduate School of

Journalism, she was the recipient of a Pulitzer Fellowship to cover

the civil war in Mozambique. She lives in Oakland, California.

Mark Powelson
is an editor and researcher who was editor of San

Francisco’s award-winning city magazine and vice president of the

PBS affiliate KQED.
