The Lyon effect is the inactivation of one of the X-chromosomes in female mammals. A geneticist named Mary Lyon postulated that if the Y-chromosome is tiny and the X-chromosome is very large, then females (XX phenotype) would have considerably more genetic material than males (XY phenotype) if both X-chromosomes were expressed. Thus, one of the two X-chromosomes in females is typically not expressed.
