It was during this turbulent period of transition that I was in China. Struggle and civil war (interrupted by a war with Japan ) continued for twenty-two years before Mao Tse-tung defeated Chiang Kai-shek and established the People's Republic of China. Chiang, with remnants of his army and many of his followers, took refuge on the island of Taiwan, where they continued a government which they claimed was still the government of all China. America recognized that government as the government of China until December 1978, although it had lost its seat in the United Nations in 1971.
