Chapter Twelve

As we sailed away from
the dock to Liberty Island, we
looked back and saw
the Verona City skyline
. The skyline
had
never been tinkered with since the days
when
it was New York City.

I looked away from the grand city and now toward the island, where I was taking my angel of the night.
This
i
sland had been my solitude for years. And very recently, I would come here and think what would be coming over the horizon.
I had no idea that I would be able to take the very person who was what I was looking for.

The ferry stopped and docked; the lines were secured and the gangplank was lowered.
We stepped out of the
ferry
and made our way forward
to disembark
.

“The S
tatue of Liberty is to the right. Le
t’s go this way,” Juliet said, p
ulling my hand down a path to the right that was the quickest route to see the Statue of Liberty.

I held my ground and said,
“I have something else
I want to show you.”
I maneuvered myself to no longer be dragged by her to the right and shifted our weight straight ahead toward the old New York City Skyline.

I led Juliet by the hand until we made our way to t
he water. We hopped over the ropes,
so we could feel the cold water wash up on our feet.

“That’s cold!”
Juliet called out. She had kicked off her shoes so she could feel the cold water on her toes.

“Yes, it is,” I said, l
aughing as the water washed
o
nto my ankles.
She was right. The water was really darn cold.

I look
ed over at Juliet who was now playing and splashing in the water that barely came up to her knees. I looked at her
and
never
felt so much love in my heart for anyone.

Juliet saw me looking at her and smiled. She looked out toward the water and said,
“I

m afraid, Romeo.”

“Why?”
I yelled out to her.

“What if others don

t see this to be the way we see it?”
Juliet walked over to where I was standing and wrapped her arms around my waist.

I looked down at Juliet and I wanted to remove all hurt and pain from her body.
All I
could do was say the following
, “I

ll do everything in my power to see to it you never feel pain again.”

Juliet looked at me and said,
“Pain is part of the beauty of the world. Without pain we wouldn

t be able to measure the extent of joy.”

“Even
still
,” I said as plainly as I could.
“A
s long as I breathe
,
I will make it a priority that I reli
e
ve you of as much of it as possible.”

Juliet looked at me and smiled.

I believe you.

I held her tight in my arms and just felt the peace of being together. I knew if both families could somehow tap into the peace that Juliet and I feel for one another, maybe it could change their minds. I know it was farfetched, but so is what I felt for Juliet. It was beyond this world. Just maybe was bigger than their hate. “
Tomorrow night

There is a beautiful white stage just to the front of it.
It’s just sitting there right out in the middle of nowhere, a beautiful white gothic stage. It seems out of place, but is beautiful nonetheless.
We will bring them there
to a celebration in a mystery family member’s honor.”

“Who will the mystery family member be that we will be celebrating?”

“We will be introducing ourselves to each other’s families.”

Juliet rolled her head in my ch
est as we both looked at the breath
taking view of Verona.
“Romeo, h
ow could I feel the way I do about you so
quickly
?”

“B size"> ecause you

amazing. And I

m amazing. When two amazing people meet amazing
meet…amazing
things are bound to happen.”

Juliet looked into my eyes and melted. “You, Mr. Romeo
,
a
re more amazing than I could have
ever wished you to be.”

I lowered my head and kissed Juliet passionately. I
t was a deep, long, kiss.
“Juliet,” I whispered.

She looked up at me and
asked, “W
hat is it?”

I want to show you a place. A pl
ace I often go for tranquility.”

“Aren’t we already here?” Juliet asked.

“It’s a particular place on the island. It’s over there.” I motioned toward the Statue of Liberty. “
It

s a place so dear to me that I have never shared even the knowledge that such a place exists with anyone.

“Let

s go,” Juliet said.

“Climb on,”
I said
.

“Onto your back?”

“Yep. Hop on.

I turned and showed Juliet my back. “
Get a strong hold of my neck so when I turn
,
you have a firm hold.

“Why don

t I just fly to wherever you
want
us to go?”

I would really love it if
you would hold on to my back and experience what I’m about to show you
.

Juliet smiled at me and said,

I

ll do my best to hold on. If I slip, I can always turn to my hawk form.” Then she climbed up on my
human
back and nearly made me pass out
by
how tight
ly
she wrapped her arms around my neck.
I breathe
d
out then slowly turned to my giant werewolf form. I could feel Juliet

s grip around my wolf neck and she had her hold pretty tight. I was convinced she

d be able to hold on.

Hold on, Juliet
, I thought.
You

re about to take a ride.

With Juliet’s body completely fastened to my werewolf back,
I jumped across the fence
d
area.
I
leaped to the base of the Statue.

Then very slowly
,
I climbed up the back of
L
iberty
,
facing Verona.
Juliet was tightly gripping my back. As I went up the great statue, we both looked out to Verona.
The light
s
were spectacular as we reached higher and higher. I knew in my heart if this v
iew
inspired me and if Juliet was the one
,
s
he would see
it
for the exact beauty that it is
. She would see it
from my perspective.

As I reached the top
,
I planted myself on her left shoulder and balance
d
myself just right to turn.
Once I knew I had it steady, I turned from werewolf back to my human form.

I wrapped my arms around Juliet.
Here we
were, a vampire and a werewolf on
the shoulde
r of sister Liberty, staring out into the night.

“Romeo, I don

t want to leave you tonight.”

“What exactly does that mean
?”
I asked as I continued to embrace Juliet.

Juliet pulled away slightly and looked me in the eye and said,
“If you and
I are going to be together for
ever
, then it should start
immediately.

“Immediately? Like how?” I asked.

I want
you to take me to a safe
place
tonight. A place
where there is a giant king
-
size bed and a bad HDTV
set i
n it. I don

t want to ever not be by your side.

I looked at Juliet and was beside myself. “
It all begins
right now
. Our future begins at this moment.

I looked at Juliet and
couldn’t believe
the passion a
nd love that was behind what we were
saying. “I love you, Juliet.”
