Finally, I am so grateful to my father, Carl Hartmann, who inspired me with a love of politics and history (even if he

a lifelong Republican), and my mother, Helen Jean Hartmann, whose degree in English instilled in me a love of our language and not some inconsiderable proficiency with it. I am indescribably fortunate to have had wonderful parents who were also excellent mentors.
