“Yes, Rachel, Santa came and now he’s gone,” Kristen said, glancing out the front window. Jared turned and waved. She waved back to him. Her heart swelled. “But he’ll be back.”
“Can I open up my presents?” Rachel asked, anxious to see what Santa brought her.
“Sure, honey,” Kristen said, hugging her close. She smelled of sweet dreams and lavender talc and filled her with the joy only a mother could know. “We’ll do it together.”
Tightening her apron around her waist, she pulled her hair back into a ponytail and helped her little girl open her presents. Seeing her child’s eyes glow with pixie dust when she got to the new sweater or the storybook or pretty velvet muff for Lulu Mae was a kind of special magic. Like peeking into her soul. She wanted to linger there for a while and give her the love and guidance she needed.
Time to go back to being a mom, she thought, helping Rachel try on her new sweater with blue knitted flowers. Then Kristen opened up the storybook and began to read to her about a girl and a glass slipper. She glanced at the Christmas piano tree with a tear in her eye and smiled.
Jared would be back.
She knew it as surely as she knew the storybook had a happy ending.
When she finished reading the fairytale, Rachel wrapped her arms around her neck. “I love you, Mommy.”
Kristen melted. Was there any greater joy than that?
No, but something just as wonderful.
She had the feeling someday soon she’d be a wife again, too.
