I was glad for Milo. Having a sword and being able to fulfill his guard's duties again meant a lot to him. At least one of us was happy, I thought, staring ahead.

Khuan's caravan had stopped moving and I could see my friends clearly now. They were all waving at us, Khuan and Lilloh from the back of their ponies, and Auguste from the seat of his wagon.

We waved back.

Look to the east,
Jafer had told me in a dream. Maybe this was indeed the right option for me. Meeting the emperor and seeing the traveling city were interesting prospects to me. Also, I could learn to build mental barriers to block the spirits' voices, learn how to ignore the presence of magic.
And maybe forget Eva,
a voice whispered in my mind.

The lump in my throat swelled to a choking size. I would never forget Eva. This I knew. The best I could hope for was to learn to live without her.

With this thought in mind, I spurred my horse into a gallop and hurried to join my new traveling companions, Khuan, Lilloh, and Auguste.

Don't miss the continuing adventures of Prince Amir in
Death in the Traveling City,
coming in Fall 2009.
THE END
