“Jag,” she whispered.

I looked up at her with tears in my eyes. “Hey, baby.”

“We have a son,” she said and smiled, trying to keep her eyes open.

“Yeah.” I smiled back, bending to press my lips to hers.

I’d stayed the night in her room, sitting in a chair at her bedside, holding her hand and resting my head on the bed, slipping in and out of sleep. I think the greatest feeling in the world had been when I’d been awakened the next morning by her running her fingers through my hair. I looked up to see her watching me.

“Hey,” I said.

“Hey.”

We stared at each other for a moment before I said, “I was so scared, El.” I had to shut my eyes to keep the tears back then took hold of her hand and pressed my forehead on it against the bed. “God, so fucking scared.”

“Jag,” she murmured, her fingers once again moving through my hair.

She’d come home three days later and we got to bring Knox home four days after. Things had gotten back to normal after they’d come home, well, except for the fact that we had a tiny little person with us now who decided to scream at us every now and then for apparently no reason at all.

I now need to ge
t one more strike to finish off the Reds and go home. V signals for a curve ball, but I shake him off knowing this guy likes junk ball pitches. V then signals for a changeup and I nod. This should do it. I go into my windup, throw my changeup and get strike three.

We’ve got the next two days off then we play at home for a week, so I’ll get to spend time with El and the kids, which I need. We’ve been on the road for two weeks straight now and I miss them.
While I wait to board our plane, I call home.

“Hello?” Knox who’ll be five in a couple months answers. He’s getting to be such a big boy.

“Hey, son. How come you’re answering the phone?” I ask.

“Daddy! Did you win?”

“Yes, we won. Where’s Mommy?”

“Mommy’s taking a long bath. She told me not to bug her unless the house is on fire,” he explains.

I chuckle. I’m guessing the twins are finally in sync on their napping and El’s now able to get a little rest. I’ve told her to hire a nanny, but she’s told me that’d be a waste of money, and besides, it was a ridiculous idea since both our parents live so close and they can help out. But she rarely calls on them, not wanting to infringe on their time. I’ve told her they’d love to watch the kids any time, but she doesn’t want to be a nuisance, she says.

“Bub, take the phone to Mommy,” I tell my Knox.

“Daddy, I can’t! She said not to bug her!”

“I know she did, but I need to talk to her. Go to the bathroom and tell her it’s me.”

He sighs big. “Okay. But if I get in trouble, it’s all your fault.”

I laugh. “I’ll be sure to tell Mommy it was my fault.”

I listen as he climbs the stairs then he knocks on the bathroom door and I hear El asking what he needs.

“Daddy’s on the phone,” he says in a loud whisper. I’m guessing she’s told him to be quiet too so as not to wake Cash and Zander. “She said ‘Just a minute,’ Daddy,” Knox loudly whispers into the phone.

“Okay, buddy. Have you been a good boy for Mommy?” I ask.

“Yes! I gave Cash a bottle today and he ate it all!”

“Awesome! You’re such a good big brother. And a good helper to Mommy,” I state.

“I know! She said she’s gonna get me ice cream when you get home ‘cause I’ve been such a good helper!”

“That’s great, Knox. I’m so proud of you.”

I picture him puffing his chest out right about now. He’s a pleaser which means he’ll probably be a great athlete because he’ll do whatever it takes to make his coaches happy. I can’t wait to teach him how to throw.

“Hey baby,” El says into the phone.

“Babe. On my way home. Getting ready to board in about ten minutes.”

“Good. I miss you. Hate when you have this many road games,” she says with a sigh.

“I know. I do too. Miss you so much. Can’t wait to see you.”

“Me too. Oh, you win?” she asks.

I chuckle because out of the over twelve hundred games I’ve played she never forgets to ask if we won. “Yeah, babe. We won.”

“Good.”

I don’t want to hang up, don’t want to lose the connection with her, but I know I’ll be there tonight so it makes it more bearable.

“El?”

“Yes?”

“Can’t wait to fuck you tonight,” I say quietly as I walk over to a corner where no one can hear me. I smile when I hear her gasp at that knowing she’s blushing like crazy.

“Jag,” she says semi scolding me.

“Call one of our moms and see if the kids can spend the night,” I suggest. She rarely wants to do this, but I’m hoping tonight will be different.

“Jag…”

“Babe…”

She’s quiet for several seconds before breathing out, “Okay.”

Fuck yeah. She’s getting turned on. “Can’t wait to get my mouth on your gorgeous pussy,” I say.

“Jag…”

“You ready to be fucked hard, El?”

“God, Jag, I don’t know how you can make me so horny by just talking to me,” she whispers and then I hear Knox in the background asking what horny means. “Shit,” El says.

“That’s a bad word, Mommy,” Knox says now.

“I know it is. Knox, go get your duffle bag out of your closet and put it on your bed. Would you like to spend the night with Grandma Mary tonight?”

I hear Knox cry out a “Yeah!” before he runs to his room to do what El told him.

Now, Jag, let me tell you what
I’m
going to do to
you
tonight.”

She proceeds to give me a semi as she talks dirty to me, telling me all the naughty things she’s got planned for me. Damn.

“Gotta go, baby. I’ll see you in an hour and a half, tops. Would love it if you were waiting for me naked.”

“We’
ll see. I love you. Have a safe flight,” she says.

“Forever and a day, babe,” I tell her and we hang up.

I board the plane more than ready to go home.

Home.

I sigh and think of how lucky I am to have all that I do at this point in my life—a beautiful wife, healthy children, a great house. At one point in time, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever find peace or a place to settle, a place to call home. Then I smile to myself, resting my head back in my seat and closing my eyes, knowing that as long as I have El, I’ll always be home.

Ours is a true love that’s proven itself time and again over the years, and for that, I’m grateful. I love her. Always have, always will.

Forever and a day.
