Chapter
15

Three weeks later, his relationship with Lucy consisted of phone calls and text messages. She’d been trying to sell her house and deal with the aftermath of the events Warren had caused. Gabe’s nights were lonely, but his days were full of tending to animals, and he was thankful to be kept busy. He’d just made up his mind to give her one more week before closing shop and going to be with her. He carried the ring in his pocket as a constant reminder that he needed to leave. But Gabe received a panicked call from William that something was wrong with Stud, pulling him from his thoughts.

Gabe grabbed his bag, slid behind the wheel of his car, and rushed to the stable. William met him outside.

“How has Stud been acting?” Gabe questioned and moved quickly inside the stable doors.

“Depressed. A lot like you, Doc.”

Gabe walked into the stall to find Stud waiting with the saddle hitched on his back. Stud neighed and stamped his hoof. Gabe ran his hands down the horse’s mane. “He doesn’t seem ill.”

“He’s lonely; I told you. He’s missing Milly.”

“Where’s Milly?” Gabe asked, confused.

“Up at the lookout. He needs a rider to take him up the trail, and I thought you might be up for the trip.”

Gabe sat his bag outside the stall. “Well, I did promise to take care of him. I guess I could take him for a ride before I leave town.” Gabe walked Stud out of the stall and mounted him. “What’s Milly doing at the lookout?”

“Waiting for Stud.” William slapped Stud on the ass, and the horse took off just as Gabe grabbed the reins.

Gabe eased Stud into slower pace and made his way through the trails and up to the lookout. The last time Gabe had been there was with Lucy. His heart clenched in longing as he broke from the trail and entered into the clearing.

A blanket was spread out, and Milly was tied to a tree. Submarine sandwiches sat on both sides of a bottle of wine chilling in a bucket of ice. Lucy stood at the edge of the cliff looking out.

“Someone once told me this was the best place on the island,” she glanced over shoulder and smiled.

“It is,” he answered, dismounting Stud and tying him near Milly.

Lucy turned to face him. The white dress she wore shimmered on the wind and teased him with the outline of her body beneath. “We’re going to need a sturdy fence.”

Gabe’s lips twisted into a smile. “They told you about the premonition.”

She nodded as she moved closer and gave him the kiss he’d been longing for. Her face was radiant as she looked up at him before turning him toward the trees. She gestured to the space behind them. “I thought we could make the back of the house have this view. A nice patio with a pool for night swims and chairs for drinking our morning coffee.”

“Wait, what? William owns this land.”

“Not anymore. Well, at least not this portion. Not after I told him I wanted to build us a house, you know…when you finally get around to asking me to marry you.”

Gabe chuckled and pulled her close. Cupping her cheek, he lowered his lips to hers and pressed a tender kiss. “God, I was hoping you’d say that.”

Gabe released her and pulled out the box before dropping to one knee. Her eyes widened in surprise as a smile split her lips. “How did you…did your sister tell you I came back?”

“I’ve had it since the day you left. I can’t imagine living one more day without you in my life. I need you like I need my next breath, Lucy. Please say you’ll marry me so we can get started on our happily ever after.”

Her smile widened, and she held out her hand. “Yes, yes, yes. I can’t think of anything I want more.”

Gabe took the ring out of the box and slid it on her finger before rising. He wrapped her in his arms and kissed her, spinning her around. His heart flooded with love and emotion, replacing the misery he’d felt while she was gone. This was right. She was right, and she was about to be all his. He was the luckiest man in the world.
